Gary D. Davis, also known as Blind Gary Davis, coined his nickname after he was diagnosed with blindness at infancy. He began his professional career in the Piedmont blues scene of Durham, North Carolina where he taught Blind Boy Fuller. Davis then converted to Christianity and became a minister to explore his religious faith. In the 1940s his career had a rebirth in New York as a part of the American folk music revival. There, he recorded his most notable songs “Samson and Delilah” and “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”. Reed’s notable fingerpicking guitar style influenced many after his time such as Bob Dylan, Larry Johnson, Rory Block, and many more.
